Abstract

This paper analyzes the elements of the pathetic and of omens in Eça de Queirós’s A tragédia da Rua das Flores. The investigation focuses on episodes marked by intuitions, symbols and significant interruptions which, throughout the narrative, foreshadow the tragic outcome. The study highlights how the characters, especially Victor and Genoveva, are enveloped in an atmosphere of restlessness and emotional anticipation, which manifests itself through dreams, gazes, gestures and ambiguous speech. The symbolism of the color black is widely explored as a visual mark of mourning, death and impending doom. Expressions of the pathetic are also seen in extreme attitudes and in the experience of impotence in the face of fate. Finally, it is shown that the omens not only anticipate the incestuous outcome, but structure the narrative as a network of implicit meanings, intensifying the dramatic tension and revealing a fatalistic view of love, identity and the human condition.
