Resumo

This article focuses on the creation of the Faculty of Letters as an autonomous unit of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. It outlines the history of its post graduate courses (stricto sensu and lato sensu) in the area of Languages and Literatures. It describes how these courses have evolved, pointing out their present curricular structure, main areas and research lines. It indicates their goals, as well as their evaluation by CAPES.
