Nationalism, Hot Air and Honoris Causa

In this study, we aim to shed a light on the connection between aeronautics, aviation and nationalism across the ages and in various political and cultural constellations. Even before its first realisation in the 18th century, the idea of human flight held a fascination for much of the population. Often, ascension shows and the fame of aeronauts and pilots were exploited for nationalistic purposes, affirming the power and prestige of the respective rulers and/or governments (cf. names and iconography of balloons and aeroplanes). Academia also played an important role in these processes of appropriation.
