critique of Western modernity and progress in The Crocodile and Winter Notes on Summer Impressions by F. Dostoevsky
Abstract
The paper analyzes two works by Dostoevsky: the short story The Crocodile and the collection of essayistic notes Winter Notes on Summer Impressions. The objective is to demonstrate how Dostoevsky’s literary output – particularly in the period following his exile in Siberia – articulates with broader social, political, and philosophical discourses. The analysis is structured in three stages: (i) a contextualization of the sociopolitical landscape of 19th-century Russia; (ii) a critical examination of the aforementioned texts; and (iii) an investigation into how these discursive elements are mediated through the symbolic opposition between the “tame” and the “predatory”.
