ETHICAL LIFE IN TAYLOR
HEGEL'S LEGACY IN THE CONCEPTS OF AUTHENTICITY AND RECOGNITION
Abstract
This article investigates the influence of Hegel’s concept of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) on Charles Taylor’s philosophy, particularly his notions of recognition and authenticity. Taylor views ethical life as essential for understanding the contemporary social sphere, linking reason, expression, and Greek principles. Using a literature review, the study shows how Taylor updates the concept in two ways: first, in authenticity, as a commitment to being true to oneself while developing relational individualities; and second, in recognition, highlighting the role of autonomous and inclusive communities, evidencing Hegel’s original concept and its reformulation to understand individual identity.
