Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the historical factors contributing to the rivalry between Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu in Rio de Janeiro and their role in forming Brazilian Vale Tudo in the 1980s and 1990s. Employing the methodology of Hybrid Oral History, which involved interviews and various sources, it was observed that this rivalry extended beyond the realm of sports, resulting in street conflicts, academy invasions, and Vale Tudo events, influencing the identity construction of combat practices with virile elements. Furthermore, the partnership between Muay Thai and Luta Livre emerged after the invasion of the Naja academy by Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, marking a significant moment in the history of combat sports in the country.
