“A TREE WITHOUT ROOTS CANNOT STAND!”

A LOOK AT CAPOEIRA IN PORTO ALEGRE/RS FROM THEIR MATRICES

Abstract

This article aims to provide a historical synthesis of the presence of the practice of modern capoeira in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, from the point of view of the lineages that arrived there. To this end, data produced by several researchers associated with different capoeira groups in the region and data produced during the Mapping of Capoeira in Rio Grande do Sul, carried out by IPHAN – Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage, were used. The analysis seeks a certain historical breadth at the expense of depth and has as its main guiding thread the notion of matrices (Dutra, 2019) as a way of giving relevance to the first teachers who arrived in this city and established the foundations for the practice of capoeira in the state.
