THE NOBLEMAN'S SPORTING INITIATIVES IN ILHÉUS:
ROWING (1921 - 1942)
Abstract
The research focussed on the first steps of the sport of rowing in the city of Ilhéus, Bahia, between 1921 and 1942. To this end, the newspapers Correio de Ilhéus and Diário da Tarde were used, historical sources infused with political, social, and economic implications, whose owners maintained connections with the local elite. During this period, the city underwent an urban reform inspired by the urban restructuring of the then federal capital, Rio de Janeiro. With a cosmopolitan port and resources from cocoa production, Ilhéus attracted Europeans and traders, offering leisure alternatives for a modernity-driven elite. This led to the emergence of rowing clubs that competed locally and established exchanges with Salvador and the Recôncavo region of Bahia.
