With Eça de Queiros’ “The Mandarin” as a backdrop, this article explores Max Weber’s and Georg Simmel’s perspectives on modernity. The analysis seeks connections between these two intellectuals and the Portuguese author, revealing how characteristic elements of the “disenchantment of the world” – monetary culture and rationality – point to a surprising convergence between Weber and Simmel.
Key words: Modernity; Simmel; Weber; Rationality; Monetary Culture; Eça de Queirós.
