Subjectivities at the Turn of the Century: Poetry and Correspondence of Reina María Rodríguez in the 1980s

Literary criticism has pointed out that, during the 1980s, Cuban poetry shifted from a militant orientation to a focus on subjective and individual concerns—that is, in short, exchanging “we” for “I.” This article examines the emergence of this new subjectivity through the work of Reina María Rodríguez, by relating her poetry from the 1980s to her correspondence with writers such as Arturo Arango and Francisco Morán, as well as with individuals outside the literary field, such as Héctor Falcón. In this regard, we contend that the changes in poetry reflect writers’ tensions with cultural institutions and also entail the emergence of new modes of conceiving subjectivity. Lastly, we offer some reflections on the Cuban fin de siècle, shaped by these issues and by a melancholic distancing from the 1960s and 1970s.
