Antes do passado: Between the Genocidal Will and the Power of the Reliquat
Abstract
This article proposes, through the reading and analysis of the memoir Antes do passado – o silêncio que vem do Araguaia (2012) by Liniane Haag Brum, a reflection on the possibility of the Brum family’s mourning process regarding the forced disappearance of Cilon Cunha Brum – an Araguaia guerrilla fighter – by means of literature, since her work is constituted by a compositional hybridity (Seligmann-Silva, 2009) in its status as testimonial production. However, beyond literature, there is an interdiction of mourning concerning the Araguaia Guerrilla massacre, as it is circumscribed by a “genocidal will” (Nichanian, 2012) that prevents the historicization of the event (Vecchi, 2014), resulting in a tension between the possibility and the impossibility of coping with this bloody episode of recent national history.
