Between historical figure and fictional character: a critical analysis of the series “Carême: the culinary rebel”

Abstract

In 2025, the Apple TV+ streaming network launched its streaming series "Carême" (subtitled "The Culinary Rebel" in Portuguese). The series likely depicts the period between 1803 and 1804, taking as its starting point the year Carême began serving Prince Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord and the date of Napoleon Bonaparte's coronation as Emperor of France. Developed in eight chapters, the plot unfolds through real characters guided by a largely fictional narrative. Considering the series' appeal to gastronomy students and those interested in the subject in general, the analysis proposed here aims to draw a parallel between the narratives established by the series and the works of Ian Kelly (2005) and Marie-Pierre Rey (2021), two books dedicated to the life of the great chef.
