Resumen

Elementary rhetorical manuals in the Greco-Roman world, called progymnasmata, provided for school exercises based on the chreia (khreía). These manuals have been studied recently by New Testament scholars, who have been interested in the chreia for some time. The study of the progymnasmata has influenced New Testament studies in several ways. One is
the set of techniques for expanding a creia, which can be compared with techniques used by Gospel writers. Another is the documentation of exercises in the shortening of creias; if Gospel writers may shorten as well as expand their material, there must be some changes of method in Synoptic studies. Two
other possible points of contact have received less attention. One is the existence of a very simple type of chreia (apophantic chreia), which may be present in the Q Source. The other is the question of the social setting. We have barely begun to ask where anyone who had contact with Jesus or with Jesus traditions could have become acquainted with the chreia.
