Abstract

This research analyzes the influence of the railway on the development of football in Brazil at the end of the 19th century and in the 20th century, a period of great socioeconomic transformations. To this end, a systematic review of articles was carried out in the SCOPUS, SciELO and Portal de Periódicos Capes databases. Given the predominance of documentary analyses, research demonstrated that the expansion of football was due to the high incidence of foreigners in Brazil at the time, mainly English railway builders. The vector railways took on the role of promoting football, influencing the origin of clubs from railway companies, their workers and/or creating the conditions for the sport to reach different regions, whether as a systematized practice or not.
