O conteúdo exíguo segundo uma ótica não-individualista
Abstract
Abstract
This paper aims at developing and defending a new account of narrow content along the lines of the anti-individualistic strand in philosophy of mind and the information tradition in semantics. The purpose is to endorse a shift of perspective on narrow content, traditionally viewed either as a representation wholly determined by what goes inside the head or as the mere internal contribution to wide content. Its burden is to show that the content of some mental states are determined in part by the relations the individual bear to entities of his environment, but also in part by the instantiation of some property of his brain in a way that ensures local supervenience. On the account offered here, narrow content of mental states and events must be construed as the Russellian proposition consisting of a higher-order property, metaphysically realized by different lower-order properties A narrow concept refers directly to such higher-order property if and only if it is instantiated in some act of thought by the instantiation of such higher-order property and because of the instantiation of such property in all individuals indistinguishable in respect to some relevant neurological property of their brains.
