Abstract

Between Bars and Galleries: Prison on Display This article examines prison photographs from the late 19th century to the present, understanding them as prison heritage, institutional records circulated between countries, and elements of exhibitions. Photographing prisoners for identification was a control practice tied to disciplinary power, linked to the surveillance and normalization of bodies. Images of prison buildings have legitimized order and institutional effectiveness. Today, used for different purposes, they help build diagnoses that contrast present and past. The article engages with prison archives preserved in museums, archives, and exhibitions, with examples from Brazil connected to Portugal and Italy.

É doutora em História pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, Porto Alegre, Brasil). É mestra em História pela UFRGS. Graduação em História pela Faculdade Porto Alegrense de Educação Ciências e Letras (FAPA, Porto Alegre, Brasil). Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa CNPq-2.
