Celso Furtado and the culture of dependency

Abstract

From his Theory of Underdevelopment, Celso Furtado explores the cultural aspect of underdevelopment and dependency, in order to reaffirm its main concepts and thesis. This paper aims to present briefly, and in general, Furtado’s refl ections over the connections between culture and development, highlighting the specificities of underdeveloped countries, in which directly infl uences the cultural dominance exerted by the central countries in the conformation of a culture of dependency.
