Abstract

Introduction: Occupational therapy arrived in Brazil due to the polio epidemic in 1956, being directly influenced by the United States. In the early 2000s, there was government support to open new courses at federal universities in the country, thus marking the expansion of new courses in occupational therapy in the country. Methods: The objectives of this research are to analyze the historical processes that led to the establishment of occupational therapy in the state of Paraíba, identifying the reasons for creation and the initial challenges for implementing the course at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). The investigation carried out was through a qualitative study of an analytical nature, involving interviews and the data analyzed through transcriptions of the interviews carried out. Results: The first Occupational Therapy course in Paraíba was through UFPB, with the main pillars of mobilization being the Support Program for Restructuring and Expansion Plans of Federal Universities and due to the need for these professionals in the State. During the implementation process, some challenges were observed, ranging from the preparation of the Pedagogical Political Project (PPC) to the construction of the department's infrastructure, in addition to the population's lack of knowledge about the profession. Conclusion: despite marked difficulties, the invisibility of the profession was overcome, the collective construction of the PPC, facing bureaucracy, and the hiring of professionals, showing the perseverance of the professionals involved in the entire process.
