From practical pessimism to rational death
the trip to Sorrento in the light of suicide

The present work aims to highlight Nietzsche’s change of stance regarding “suicide” starting from his trip to Sorrento. While the professor of philology concentrated above all on “practical pessimism” and how to combat it, whether in the case of artistic human being or the Alexandrian theoretician, the philosopher Nietzsche, by breaking with the metaphysics of his former masters, revisiting his unpublished notes on “suicide” and personally experiencing some suicidal longings, shifts the central point of the problem: rather than promoting an escape from “practical pessimism”, based on preserving life at all costs, one should instead attempt to confront it directly, not waiting for “natural death”, but enabling an activity in dying, a consummation through rational decision.
