Author Guidelines

The Brazilian Journal of Dance Studies accepts for publication works in the form of articles, essays, visual essays, experience reports, dance reviews, book reviews, interviews, memoirs, and translations of original and unpublished texts written in Portuguese, English, French, or Spanish that are the result of academic/artistic studies and promote knowledge in areas related to dance.

All works must be submitted through the Electronic Journal Publishing System (SEER) at: https://revistas.ufrj.br/index.php/rbed. At the time of submission, the name(s) of the author(s), institution to which they belong, email, postal address, telephone number(s) of the author(s), article titles, and information about abstracts in the original language of the article, in Spanish and English, must be provided. A brief description in the biography section, which will be included at the end of the article, and the ORCID registration of the author(s) are also required.

It is important to note that general information about authorship, affiliation, qualifications, and email addresses must be restricted to the registration form and should not appear anywhere else in the work.

To submit texts to the Revista Brasileira de Estudos em Dança, a master's or doctoral degree is required. However, the numbers will have a percentage distribution of publication of at least 80% for researchers with a doctorate and a maximum of 20% for researchers with a master's degree.

Submissions by graduate researchers, specialists, or master's students require co-authorship by a doctoral researcher (with or without a supervisory relationship) and will be evaluated blindly.

Once the conditions for the submission of an article by an author have been met, for every two publications, the evaluation will be carried out by the blind system for forwarding to the reviewers. In case of disagreement, a third reviewer will be consulted.

Corrections to content and standards, including ABNT, are the sole responsibility of the author(s). Papers submitted without the necessary corrections and formatting will be returned so that the recommendations can be addressed, thus avoiding overloading the journal.

The Brazilian Journal of Dance Studies primarily accepts submissions of articles in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French. As a bilingual journal, all articles will be published in two languages: Portuguese and English, Portuguese and Spanish, or Portuguese and French. Other languages will be accepted exclusively by invitation or after consultation with the editors, and publication in Portuguese (in addition to the original language) is mandatory.

It is the responsibility of the authors to provide the translation of the text into the second language, to be sent to the journal only after the text has been approved by the reviewers.

In addition to articles, academic texts from different sections may be submitted, including essays, visual essays, interviews, experience reports, dance reviews, memoirs, and book reviews. Submissions may be made at any time, on a rolling basis, except for specific dates for thematic dossiers.

Authors must provide their ORCID number.

If there is more than one author, the submission implies knowledge and agreement with the Editorial Policy and Guidelines for publication in the journal, with the author responsible for the submission assuming the applicable responsibilities. In the case of images or photos, authorization from the photographer or copyright owner of the image must be entered into the system at the time of submission by the corresponding author as a supplementary document.

For the sections on experience reports, essays, visual essays, dance reviews, memorials (and their respective translations), the texts may have unique formatting and are not required to follow the formatting rules of the articles section.

For the articles section, book reviews and their respective translations must follow the following rules:

Titles (in Portuguese and in the second language) should be written in upper and lower case, i.e., with lowercase letters, with capital letters only at the beginning and in proper names (example: O pensamento vivo de Benjamin).

Abstracts (in Portuguese and in the second language) should not exceed 150 words.

Keywords (in Portuguese and in the second language) should appear immediately below the abstract, preceded by the expression “Keywords:”, separated by semicolons and ending with a period. They should be written with lowercase initial letters, except for proper nouns and scientific names.

The body text (in Portuguese) of submissions must be between 30,000 and 80,000 characters with spaces (main text, notes, and captions; except for the title, abstract, keywords, and references). Special requirements (for guests) can be discussed with the editors. It is not necessary to submit the English version of the article in advance, prior to evaluation and approval. Submission should only be made after approval (except for the English title, abstract, and keywords, which are provided in advance).

For the use of illustrations, the author must have formal documents authorizing or releasing the publication of the images used, when not in the “public domain” or with international licenses, such as Creative Commons. The authorship of the images must be identified in the captions, as well as the persons or institutions that authorized their use.

Footnotes, when necessary, should be explanatory in nature.

Quotations longer than three lines should be highlighted from the body of the text, in single space, in 10-point font, without quotation marks, and indented four centimeters from the left margin.

Justified margins with paragraphs 2.54 cm from the left and right margins and 3.17 cm from the top and bottom margins (Office 2003 Default standard).

Double quotation marks are used only for direct quotations in the body of the text;

Italics are used for foreign words, neologisms, for particular uses, and titles of works.

Text and file size

Articles – may contain between 30,000 and 80,000 characters (including spaces), with references, notes, images, tables, etc. The file must be limited to 4 MB.

Reviews, experience reports, interviews, and critiques of works should be up to 20,000 characters with spaces.

Essays and memorials should be up to 80,000 characters with spaces.

All texts must be submitted in a universal text editor (such as Word for Windows or equivalent), using Arial font, size 12, 1.5 spacing.

If the submitted text is approved, it will be up to the author to insert the approved text into the template corresponding to the edition in which their text will be published, which will be provided by the editorial team as the last step before publication.

The standards used by the Brazilian Journal of Dance Studies are in accordance with the requirements of the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards): see citation models below. The main standard is to follow the author-date-page criterion in parentheses after direct or indirect citations, with the author's last name in upper and lower case, followed by the year and page (Oliveira, 2015, p. 132). The list of references should appear as follows:

Titles of artistic works (shows, songs, performances) and published works: mention the original titles in italics in the body of the text, followed by the release date (ex.1). In the case of foreign works, the translated title should be mentioned in parentheses, followed by its release date (ex.2). If the same work is mentioned again, keep the title in the language in which the body of the text is written. Only when the title cannot be translated or when the original is already a foreign word will the title remain in the original language throughout the text whenever it is mentioned. The title of the artistic work should be written in italics in its original language or as established in Portuguese, except when it is a translation.

Related audiovisual products may be submitted as supplementary documents (images, sound, and moving images) in MP3, MP4, and/or JPG formats. It is also recommended that video files be deposited on the Internet Archive portal, or sound files on the Petrucci Music Library portal.
