This text reviews the book entitled Prefixação na língua portuguesa contemporânea [Prefixation in contemporary Portuguese], written by Portuguese linguist Graça Rio-Torto (2019), a leading figure in lexical morphology studies in her country. After four decades of research dedicated to vernacular lexicogenesis, focusing mainly on suffixation and verbalizations of a morphological nature, the author turns, in the aforementioned work, to word formation via prefixation, collecting, improving and systematizing the contributions already presented in previous publications of her authorship (1993, 2014a, 2014b, 2016). The fact that prefixal affixation has always been less studied and systematized than suffixal affixation (Montero Curiel, 1999; Basilio, 2009), despite its undeniable importance in the constitution and renewal of the lexicon, reinforces the importance of the publication for morphological and lexical studies of Portuguese. The review consists of an overview of the work in question, which undoubtedly appears as a preponderant study on prefixation, a morpholexical procedure of clear importance to the processes of constitution and renewal of the Romance vocabulary repertoire.
Keywords: Portuguese Language. Word formation. Prefixation.
