This article aims to analyze the linguistic choices adopted in the interpretation in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) related to semantics and pragmatics, in contexts of sign language proficiency assessment. This is a qualitative research study, with an exploratory and descriptive character, supported by a case study. The data were collected from the recording of an evaluation board in the area of translation and interpretation of Libras/Portuguese. The analysis focuses on video excerpts from the authors of this text, who faithfully reproduced the selected materials that are part of the collection of the institution responsible for proficiency assessment. Three excerpts were analyzed, focusing on lexical, semantic, and pragmatic choices. The results reveal that, although the interpreted theme was the same, the candidates resorted to different lexicons and syntactic structures. Some of these choices ended up generating semantic meanings that do not correspond to the source language text. Despite Libras offering multiple linguistic resources, such as topicalization, deixis, and anaphora, among others, the two candidates did not resort to them, often falling back on signed Portuguese. This research intends to contribute to studies involving the translation and interpretation of the Libras-Portuguese language pair.
