Multiverb constructions in the dilect of Triângulo Mineiro, Minas Gerais

Abstract

Serial verb constructions (SVCs) are formed by a verbal sequence not mediated by a coordinator or a subordinator. These are mono-clausal structures in which a single functional domain expressing tense, mood, aspect and negation dominates the verbal sequence. Semantically, they denote a single event. We examine multiverb constructions found in a dialect of Brazilian Portuguese spoken in the region of Triângulo Mineiro, state of Minas Gerais. These constructions have a [SUBJ V1 V2 (OBJ)] configuration, sharing many properties with SVCs. Following recent theories of SVSs, we suggest an analysis in which V1 is a grammatical item encoding aspectual information.

Cilene Rodrigues, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

Docente/pesquisadora da PUC-Rio, bolsista de produtividade do CNPq. Foi coordenadora do GTTG-ANPOLL, e é atualmente coordenadora do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem da PUC-Rio. Coordenada também o grupo de Pesquisa do CNPq "The great leap forward: investigations into the evolution of human language". Possui graduação em Letras pela Universidade de Brasília, mestrado em Linguística pela Universidade de Brasília e PhD em Linguística/Teoria Formal da Gramática pela University of Maryland. Em linguagem cognição, conduz investigações sobre os impactos das desordens mentais sobre a linguagem, particularmente sobre o sistema combinatorial. Em linguística Formal, conduz pesquisas em sintaxe teórica, experimental e comparada, em línguas da América do Sul, com foco em complexidade sintática e questões de interface. Em linguística evolutiva, tem interesse em aspectos de ordem afetiva e sensorial vs. aspectos de ordem cognitiva, com pesquisas em comunicação animal, ideofones e interjeições.
