Cognitive Geosociolinguistics: sociocultural and spatial variation in cognition and language use

Abstract

The emergence of Cognitive Geosociolinguistics, an interdisciplinary paradigm that integrates the principles of Sociolinguistics, Geolinguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, developed in Santos’ doctoral thesis (2021), represents one of the most recent models of Cognitive Linguistics. Its objective is to explore the geosociocognitive dimensions of linguistic variation and change, using quantitative and robust empirical methods. This study, therefore, presents the reasons for the need for this emerging area, albeit synoptically, showing its inevitability within the scope of Cognitive Linguistics, the ways and methods of reconciling the “cognitive”, “sociocultural” and “geospatial” aspects. As an application to Portuguese, an overview of a research on conceptual onomasiological variation within the domain of sexuality is presented, more specifically of the female and male genital-sexual organs, making use of a representative sociodialectological sample of 72 employees surveyed and residents of Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, from the perspective of the linguistic description model in theme.

Elias de Souza Santos, Universidade do Estado da Bahia (UNEB)

Possui estágio de pós-doutoramento, doutorado e mestrado em Estudos Linguísticos pela Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana. É professor de Linguística e Língua Portuguesa na Universidade do Estado da Bahia, onde leciona disciplinas relacionadas à Gramática, à História das Línguas e às Práticas de Ensino. Suas pesquisas concentram-se na Sociolinguística, na Geolinguística, na Linguística Cognitiva e na Didática, com ênfase nos significados socioculturais e cognitivos da variação e mudança linguísticas, no ensino de língua portuguesa e na relação professor-aluno, família, comunidade e contextos institucionais de âmbito social e cultural. É sócio efetivo do Grupo de Estudos Linguísticos do Nordeste (GELNE), pesquisador do Grupo de Pesquisa Estudos Interdisciplinares sobre Contemporaneidade e do Grupo de Pesquisa Constituição, Variação e Mudança do/no Português, certificados pelo CNPQ. Orienta atividades de pesquisa, ensino e extensão, com publicações de capítulos de livros e artigos em diversos periódicos.
