About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Codex - Journal of Classical Studies is a blind peer-reviewed journal which is published online since 2009. It publishes scientific papers in the field of Classical Studies for students, professors, and researchers of the area.

Codex is sponsored by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), by PROAERA - Group of Studies in Representation of Classical Antiquity and by PIPGLA - Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies Program in Applied Linguistics.

PROAERA (a research group listed in the Research Groups Directory at CNPq, as well as in the Research Projects Directory at UFRJ) is a group bringing together research projects that seek to shed light on the perceptions of Classical Antiquity prevalent in Western societies. Projects dealing with the rereading of Classical texts and imagery through the use of a contemporary theoretical apparatus are also welcome.

The journal mission is to offer a vast mapping of research in the Classical Studies area, thus the target audience is able to follow the research done by those who contribute to the growth of this field in the country and abroad.

Codex accepts research articles, book reviews, and translations of texts from Classical Antiquity. We welcome manuscripts written in English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. There are no publication charges.

Peer Review Process

-All submitted manuscripts that follow the author guidelines and the Code of Conduct and Best Practice need approval by the Editor in Chief, who will check for authorship issues (such as plagiarism, republication, etc.). Any suspected cases of misconduct will be handled as outlined in the COPE guidelines.

-The Editor in Chief assigns the manuscript to an assistant editor, who oversees the peer review process.

-The assistant editor sends the manuscripts to two referees, each from a different institution and not from the authors' institutions.

- If both referees advise publication, the editor sends the manuscript to print, after having sent it to the author for the  revisions requested by the referees.

- If the two referees disagree on whether the manuscript should be published, the editor sends it to a third referee. If the third referee agrees the paper should be published, the submission is accepted.

- All submitting authors are informed of accept or reject status and receive the referees' reports.

Publication Frequency

Codex - Journal of Classical Studies publishes two issues per year (published continously).
