Abstract

This article analyzes the construction of the Roman presence in the Lower Rhine between the 1st century BCE and 1st century CE, focusing on the strategies of expansion, territorial control, and sociopolitical reorganization implemented by Rome in one of its main frontier zones. Starting from the invasion of Gaul and the military campaigns led by Julius Caesar and his successors, the study examines the impacts of Roman occupation on the human and environmental landscape of the region, as well as the administrative and infrastructural transformations resulting from the militarization of the Rhine. Highlighted in this process are the founding of colonies and the adoption of resettlement policies, exemplified by the forced migration of the Ubii and the formation of the Cugerni group. The case of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, in the present-day city of Xanten, is analyzed in detail as a paradigmatic example of the interplay between military presence, urbanization, and identity construction. By combining textual sources and archaeological evidence, the article demonstrates that the Romanization of the Lower Rhine was marked by local negotiations, cultural resistances, and pragmatic adaptations on the part of the imperial power. By investigating the mechanisms employed by Rome to consolidate its authority over frontier territories, the study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the processes of domination and integration that characterized the Roman imperial expansion in western and mid-western Europe.
