In this article, I will identify Homeric antecedents in the characterization of Apollo in Horace, Odes 4.6, considering their associations with poetic and political issues in the poem. We will analyse the ambivalent character of Apollo, who, as an archer god, is connected with themes such as politics and war, and, as a god of the lyre, is patron of the poet and of the celebrations of the new Augustan Age. We will see how the bellicose god turns into an ally of the Roman poet, who, with his Greek metres, celebrates the rites of Augustan Rome.
