The portrayal of Herodicus of Selimbria found in Republic (405-408e) suggests that he was the inventor of dietetic medicine associated with gymnastics. The contrast between the time of Asclepius and that of Herodicus produces a punctual image of the development of medical techniques and diets. Some Hippocratic treatises, such as On Ancient Medicine, On Regimen in Acute Diseases and The Art, on the other hand, help to locate a kind of gradual development of diets and other combined techniques in the field of medicine. The study of the Platonic image in contrast to some Hippocratic statements suggests that Herodicus probably made important discoveries in the field of dietetic medicine and nutrition associated with gymnastics, albeit in a more recent period than Plato's synthetic description implies. It appears that Herodicus' discoveries can be more accurately situated in the Classical period, where he implemented new findings within an already established dietetics framework. Furthermore, the study reveals Socrates' uncompromising stance on dietetic medicine and his opposition to treating chronic patients, positioning him as a conservative figure within the overall project of the work.
