Abstract

The novel of Xenophon of Ephesus has traditionally been regarded as an epitome of a lost original, which has led scholars to consider its style simple and largely devoid of literary allusion. This article proposes a different approach: through the analysis of a specific passage, it highlights Xenophon’s imitation of Thucydides, thus revealing a greater degree of compositional complexity.
